FEEDING GUIDES

Phase Feeding Schedules & Ration Transitions

Detailed protocols on when and how to transition animals to new diets to maximize gut health and feed efficiency.

TECHNICAL RESOURCES

Timing is Everything in Animal Nutrition

An animal's nutritional requirement changes dramatically as it grows. Feeding a single ration from weaning to market is highly inefficient; you are either under-feeding protein (stunting early growth) or over-feeding protein (wasting expensive nutrients in the finisher phase). Phase feeding is the solution.

Melick Aquafeeds provides comprehensive, species-specific feeding guides that detail exactly when to transition your herd or flock to the next ration. These guides are based on either age (e.g., broiler days) or target body weight (e.g., swine nursery phases). Properly managing these transitions minimizes digestive upset and maximizes your return on investment by ensuring the nutrient density always matches the genetic requirement.

Phase Schedules

Downloadable PDF charts detailing the exact days or body weights at which you should transition to the next lower-protein, higher-energy diet.

Transition Health

Learn how to blend feeds or utilize specific feed additives during phase changes to prevent gut scouring and maintain steady daily intake.

Feed Budgeting

Our guides provide exact feed budgets (e.g., 'feed exactly 4.5 lbs of Nursery Phase 1 per pig'), helping you accurately forecast feed orders and costs.

TECHNICAL DEEP DIVE

Managing the Weaning Transition in Swine

Weaning is the most stressful event in a pig's life. It involves a sudden change in environment, social structure, and a dramatic shift from highly digestible liquid sow milk to a complex, dry, plant-based diet. If this transition is managed poorly, the pig experiences a severe drop in feed intake, leading to gut atrophy (shortening of the intestinal villi) and susceptibility to post-weaning diarrhea. Our feeding guides detail a strict phase-feeding budget. We start with Phase 1 diets containing highly digestible animal proteins (spray-dried plasma, fish meal) and lactose to mimic sow milk and stimulate intake. As the gut matures over the first 21 days post-weaning, our budgets guide you on how to slowly introduce complex carbohydrates (corn) and plant proteins (soybean meal). Strict adherence to this feed budget prevents "starve-outs" and ensures the pig reaches the grower floor healthy and ready to consume large volumes of feed.
