TECHNICAL RESOURCES

Transparency in Feed Formulation

At Melick Aquafeeds, we believe that an educated customer is our best partner. The feed tag only tells a fraction of the story. Understanding why certain ingredients are selected—and why others are avoided—is key to understanding the value of a premium feed formulation.

Our Nutrition Library provides deep insights into the raw materials that make up commercial animal feeds. We detail the Standardized Ileal Digestibility (SID) of various protein sources, the metabolizable energy values of different fats and grains, and the role of synthetic amino acids. We also explore the darker side of nutrition: anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) like trypsin inhibitors in raw soybeans and gossypol in cottonseed meal, and how our manufacturing processes neutralize them.

Protein sources (Soybean meal, Canola, DDGS, Plasma)
Energy sources (Corn, Wheat, Tallow, Vegetable Oils)
Synthetic amino acids (Lysine, Methionine, Threonine, Tryptophan)
Macro-minerals (Limestone, Monocalcium Phosphate)
Trace mineral chelates and oxides
Feed enzymes (Phytase, Xylanase, Protease)

TECHNICAL DEEP DIVE

The Role of Phytase in Phosphorus Management

Phosphorus is a critical, expensive macro-mineral essential for bone development and cellular energy (ATP). However, in plant-based ingredients like corn and soybean meal, up to 70% of the total phosphorus is bound in a ring-like molecule called phytic acid (phytate). Monogastric animals (pigs and poultry) lack the digestive enzyme needed to break this ring, meaning the phosphorus passes through the animal undigested and is excreted in the manure, creating environmental runoff issues. To compensate, nutritionists historically had to add expensive inorganic phosphorus (like dicalcium phosphate) to the diet. Our formulations utilize high doses of a synthetic enzyme called Phytase. When added to the feed, phytase actively breaks down the phytic acid molecule in the animal's stomach, releasing the bound "organic" phosphorus. This completely eliminates the need for expensive inorganic phosphorus supplementation, drastically lowers feed costs, and reduces phosphorus pollution in the manure by over 30%.
